A big box with a mic in it!
So as promised here is an update on my very own Stompbox construction project. After having looked through my collection of scrap wood I discovered that I have very little decent quality wood available to use. So after much umming and ahhing I decided on the radical concept of using some old laminate flooring. Now I hear you cry “that’s not very acoustic” and I would agree however as this is a trial project and I am amping this baby up I decided that whatever sound I got from the little beauty I would be able to mess with when playing mic’d up.
So here’s the first pic:
Dimensions - roughly 400mm x 175mm x 175mm
I used some old 15mm x 45mm pine strip wood as supports. All seams are glued with PVA and then screwed. This will probably mess with the acoustics however at this stage I’m not bothered (and my size 13 feet will be stomping rather hard so I don’t want to kill her).
Either end was eventually blocked off with laminate and 3 sound holes were drilled, the opposite end with the lead from the cheap ass mic I bought.
I mounted the mic on a scrap of pine with a copper pipe bracket. This shall be the base of the box and will be getting a battering.
Its not in the picture but I lined the interior with carpet underlay as I want a dull sound so I needed something to absorb the sound waves.
Also the feet are old brackets from a cupboard. Not sure how well they’ll work. I let you know.
So that’s it. I’ll post up a finished picture and sound file once I’ve recorded one. I’ve christened her June, now I’ve just got to get Terry built.
Laters.
